Today’s parent forum was the first in our new Challenge Series which explored the connection between the three IB programmes and how they are designed to prepare our children for the future.

The three programme coordinators explored aspects such as the shared mission of the IB, the programme models including the learner profile, international mindedness, the capstone projects and the role of service learning.  Using images of famous people, parents explored how they exemplify the ideas of the learner profile and explored how important the learner profile attributes are to our work as adults.

The team also explored the capstone projects of the PYP Exhibition, the MYP Personal Project and the Diploma Extended Essay, which are all opportunities for students to explore areas of interest and personal inquiry.  The third area of connection was the role that service learning plays in the IB programmes, in the PYP it is viewed as taking action, the MYP it is viewed as Service as Action and in the Diploma it is required as part of their service learning component.

We ended the session by exploring the four Cs of 21st Century skills, parents explored how Creativity, Communication, Collaboration and Critical thinking are essential for the workplace today.  These skill areas are illustrated by the Approaches to Learning aspect of the programme which is designed to support the development of these skills along a continuum of learning.
