Today was the second session of our challenge series which led by our two social emotional counsellors Ms. Sekai and Ms. Cath.

They began by unpacking the concept of SEL (Social Emotional Learning) and how we support this learning in the two sections of the school.  These included:

  • Leopards Way - PAWS
    Advisory
  • Relationship Building
  • Individual and Group Sessions
  • Wellbeing Programme
  • Service Learning

Cath and Sekai then had parents explore the five key components of SEL and the critical skills that are learnt in this area of learning:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management
  • Social-Awareness
  • Relationship Skills
  • Responsible Decision-Making

The team explored how the development of these skills can often be expressed through challenging behaviours such as defiance, aggression, frustration, anxiety and withdrawal. We went on to explore some of the strategies and tools that can support children when they might be experiencing these behaviours which are often signs of an unmet need.  These can stem from basic needs of being hungry, thirsty, tired or lonely through to needs of developing skills and the capacity to manage emotions.

We concluded the session by exploring some of the challenges faced by children of different age groups and strategies that we can use at home to support the learning of children in these areas.  Cath and Sekai provided prompts for parents with ideas to support the development of skills in these different areas.
