Today was the final session of our Challenge Series, led by Faith Mwesigye, our Director of Strategic Initiatives.  The session focused on the concept of Service Learning and how it differs from other concepts of service including community service, volunteerism and other helps.  Faith illustrated how these ideas are supported across the school throughout the curriculum and extracurricular activities.

Faith introduced the importance of the five stages involved in service learning to ensure that we are not causing damage, but creating positive change through reciprocity and deep understanding.

At the end of session Faith offered the following advice for parents to consider in supporting their children as they engage in service learning:

  • Model service at home: Share and reflect on family service activities.
  • Support commitments: CAS projects, transportation, encouragement.
  • Guide reflection: Discuss growth after every experience.

We concluded the session with an expo of the different service learning that students and teachers are engaged including the following:

  • Grade 3 Hydration Station Campaign.
  • Grade 5 Migration Interviews
  • Foodstep Partnership - Saturday program
  • Volleyball with Standard High - CAS Project
  • PHE with Global Junior & High School
  • Greening Club
  • Community Libraries
  • Supporting Patients at a Local Hospital
